Northern Ireland Tourist Guides “Good to Go”: Innovations
Tourist Guides in Northern Ireland have, like colleagues all over the world, had little or no work since the onset of Covid-19. But they are not giving up! They have learned to adapt and find new ways of connecting with past and potential visitors so that they can continue to offer a world class experience when it is safe for visitors to return.
Guides follow the “We're Good to Go” industry standard as well as the health protocols for Northern Ireland Tourist Guides.
UNWTO has identified ways in which tourism is changing and what visitors will want in the future. This includes:
- Domestic and local travel
- Travelling in “pods” with family and friends
- Experiential travel
- Sustainable tourism
- Working with local communities
Some examples of innovation and adaptation by members of the Tour Guides Association of Northern Ireland (TGNI)
Belfast Mic Tours
Uses a state of the art radio system to ensure participants can hear every word, which allows Donal Kelly to continue to operate in the new ‘Covid’ reality when restrictions allow, as participants can easily safely distance themselves and of course the radio receivers and ear pieces are thoroughly sanitised. Donal offers 4 main walking and cycling tours: Belfast City Centre Tour (Walking/Cycling); Lagan Legends (Walking/Cycling); Antrim Town Walking Tour and the new Ballynafeigh Walking Tour especially developed for the “local market”.
Dander and Banter Tours: Belfast in 4 Drinks
A slug of Belfast’s history with Ciara and Nicky. A pub and story tour including history and drinks tastings
Gullion Ambassador Tour Guides

A hidden gem for visitors, you will be amazed by stunning vistas, magical folklore and the secret history of its villages and people. Above all the welcome experienced is awesome! Their qualified experienced guides offer diverse and bespoke walks off-the-beaten track for the culturally curious and those wishing to explore the history, and meet the people of this borderland area.
Mountain Ways Ireland Experience

Listen to the folklore, myth and legend, handed down to Brian from his Grandparents, an unbroken oral tradition stretching far back into the mists of Irish History. Brian comes from a 7th generation mountain farming family and can teach you how to forage from natures wild larder. Listen to tales of an ancient mountain community, learn ancient Gaelic Placenames and feel the deep ancestral connection.
Rathlin 360˚ Destination Green
We’re on a journey for our visitors, towards “Rathlin 360˚ Destination Green” – a goal that every part of a visit to Rathlin, from booking to returning home, will be as carbon free as possible. A journey from fossil fuels to green, renewable energies, produced at home on the island. A shift to renewable fuels for the ferries, the on-island transport, e-bikes, e-vehicles, heating for homes and businesses. Reducing single-use plastics so less of it chokes our marine life and washes up on our shores. So, come to Rathlin, not just to get away (that still works) but to help us explore a better future.
By adapting for recovery Northern Ireland Tourist Guides are ready to welcome visitors safely and professionally and are Good to Go!
