Food waste regulations
If your business undertakes processes or activities that create food waste, you must comply with the Food Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015. These regulations will be applicable to restaurants, cafes, hotels, pubs and other tourism and hospitality businesses selling food.
The Food Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015 came into force in February 2015. This legislation requires that waste operators collect and transport food waste that has been collected separately, from 1st April 2015. From 1st April 2016 food businesses that produce more than 50kg of food waste per week are to present that food waste for separate collection. By 1st April 2017 the law will extend to cover food businesses that produce between 5kg and 50kg of food waste per week. They will be required to present that food waste for separate collection, and food businesses to ensure that food waste is not deposited in a lateral drain or sewer.
